RADON - To Worry or not To Worry?

While Radon can be moved from inside a home to the outside mitigating the negative health effects …one needs to know if there is Radon in the first place. Coldwell Banker Four Season Real estate joined the Take Action on Radon group to help provide Radon test kits to nearly 200 homes. The results are back and 1 in 3 homes tested had Radon levels above the Canadian Guidelines.
The results for Vernon come as no surprise to Pam Warkentin, Project Manager at Take Action on Radon. “It is vitally important that all British Columbians not only test their homes for radon, but also take action to lower their radon levels to protect from lung cancer,” says Warkentin.
Radon is a radioactive soil gas that can guild to dangerous levels in indoor air, making it the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. Radon exposure also increases the chance of getting lung caner if you are a smoker. Odorless and colorless, the only way to know the level of radon gas in your home is to test for it.
Solutions are readily available for residents who discover their indoor radon levels are dangerously high. Radon mitigation systems can be installed in any home and reduce radon levels by an average of over 90%. The work involved can generally be completed within a day by a certified professional.
